A total of 35 detainees out of about 50 detained in the amigo (cachot) of the Congolese National Police (PNC) under the supervision of the Djugu prosecutor's office in Mongwalu, Ituri province, escaped on the night of Tuesday, December 31 to Wednesday, January 1, 2020.

Prison sources report that to deceive the vigilance of the on-call police, these inmates sang Christian songs and prayed to implore the Lord on the occasion of the New Year 2020.

Three police officers on duty are under arrest for investigation. Mongwalu is a city located 85 km north of the city of Bunia, djugu territory, Ituri Province.
